Cheap Hotels near Jewish Ghetto Venice The Jewish Ghetto refers to a fascinating area in the Cannaregio sestiere of Venice in which Venetian Jews were once confined. Having long restricted their living conditions in Venice, in 1516 the Doges forced all Jews to move to a specific part of the city. Since they had formerly housed foundries (“geti” in the Venetian dialect), these areas became known as the “Ghetto Nuovo” and “Ghetto Vecchio”, from which today’s commonly used term “ghetto” is derived. Despite its dark past, the Jewish Ghetto is now one of the city’s most popular tourist areas, with sights including the Jewish Museum (Museo Ebraico) and Ancient Jewish Cemetery, and numerous hotels, apartments and B&Bs in Venice situated nearby. There are also several Renaissance-era synagogues, including the spectacular Spanish Synagogue, although visiting these is not always that straightforward. What you will find totally straightforward, however, is reserving one of our cheap hotels in Venice.
